From 1967 through 1970 my father, composer Harold Shapero, was director of the Brandeis University electronic music studio. The studio was equipped with a Buchla 100 modular synthesizer, which was at the time the state of the art. Though I was not a Brandeis student, but still in high school, my father allowed and encouraged me to work with the Buchla in the studio. I started working there when I was 14 and continued until I was 17. The portrait you see of me with the Buchla was taken (by my...

For as long as I can remember Rob Solheim aka Muied Lumens has been an active participant in the solstice marathons over at Electro Music. Still for some reason it has taken up untill now for Rob to release his first ever full featured album. And boy are we proud at JNN to be the host of this very first sublime album. As Rob states in one of his emails to me: âIt has kick started something that I have been missing for a while â which is to make composed stuff instead of just playing live...

Of Places and Moments is a celebration of the art of field recordings. The tracks to be included utilized recordings from the Sounds Found Project, a repository of user-contributed field recordings. The source recordings were mangled, manipulated, abused and violated, in some cases beyond recognition, to create 18 distinctly different interpretations ranging from minimal drone, to noise, to electronica.

The color of the sky at 5:57 a.m.; the smell of a dormant furnace, revived; the feel of dusty boxes. Bells, blips, and boooooms. Precipitation is inspiration. Closets are emptied --- long-hidden treasure awaits. Circuit-bent instruments, analog synths, abused vinyl, and field recordings serve as the orchestra on this release. Best enjoyed on chilly nights in low lighting. 'This is the very first of Khate releases to be of free nature' We at JNN have been long time fans of her work, and are ever...

"Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are electronically generated noises that resemble speech, but are not the result of intentional voice recordings or renderings." Hailing from Brussels in Belgium comes Michiel Geluykens aka Candstandy. Early March he nudged me towards his first full album release for a possible JNN release. It needed but a few listens to know this very much deserved a spot on the label. His original idea was to create a dreamlike atmosphere using abstract sounds and motions. I must confess that this turned into a very warm, yet still experimentally edgy result that will guide the listeners ears into a comfortzone with slow drones and...

The twelve pieces on this album reflect an ongoing interest in the temporal processes underlying musical creation from two apparently contrasting yet ultimately similar musical contexts. Post-modernist, systems-based pieces for traditional classical ensembles stand side-by-side with more static electronic works. In the former category the obvious reference points might be the work of Steve Reich and other minimalists but in contrast to the extended time-scales operative in such work, the pieces...

We all are nothing; and so we shall return. And from that emptiness grew Mtiful; meanderings through the field of experimental improv electronics. This album journeys into the physics of sound and its electronic behaviour, frantically trying to control that which lies beyond our touch. Like the chaos and unpredictability of nature, so this album shares of the deeper layers of life. Dare to dig the soil upon which we tread; dare to dive in the realm of a mad scientist mind called mystahr.

"Stereoscopic laid is an experiment in sound. What you are hearing are not 'sounds', but in fact are 'images'. The idea behind this album was to generate sound tracks equivalent to stereoscopic images, in which you see a slightly different point of view of the same scene with each eye, creating the illusion of depth. The process was really simple, I chose for each track an image and I generated two similar versions with a minor deviation, similar to the perspectives that both eyes...

Founder and curator of the Stereo-Type netlabel, KJ began producing electronic in 1999, having always played conventional instruments. Obsessed with sound, he has graphed charts of frequencies which cross reference chromatics vs. brain wave ranges and has used these maths in extensive self-experimentation, applying the results to composition. As “choenyi” and “Echo Yin” he has released varietey of netlabels since 2006. The alias “dxiv” predates these for many years and implies works...

Mike Metlay's body of work has always included abstract noisescapes, a passion he's enjoyed for nearly three decades. (A recent example is JNN014, The Redundancy Of Suicide by mindSpiral.) Mike's main noisescaping device is "Thing One", the Oberheim Xpander analog modular synthesizer he has been playing for 25 years now. Currently, as for the past 10 years or more, he uses Thing One primarily for self-modulating noise textures that can be manipulated in real time with broad control...

And if you think we’ve heard the best collaboration works yet, then let this one surprise your ears. Mister Vapor (aka the extremely prolific Mystified) joined up with Altus (one of the ambient great netlabelartists). Well fitting in some of the other ‘deep sea dives’ of this months JNN releases this album takes you deeper. Where the wonderful string-drones of Altus meet with the dark-drones of Mister Vapor this is a clash of experimentalism that cannot be missed. We are proud to host...

It was only natural the two came together after releases on timetheory and treetrunk. Mystahr provided a 40 minute live improv when mystified in his turn touched his drone-fingers on the material. Par takes (perhaps a series in the making) will take you into the depths of sound and drones.

MindSpiral is a series of collaborations between Mike Metlay and anyone who doesn’t hang up when he calls. This incarnation, mind6Spiral, resulted when Tim Walters (see e.g. JNN03) traded a night’s lodging (10 August 2008) for one hour of feeding audio from his laptop into Mike’s mixer, while Mike added his own sounds and a live audience on StillStream.com listened. It was a fair trade. Mindspiral Tim Walters

Cezary Gapik (also know as CEZAR) was born in Czestochowa, Poland in 1963. He started his musical activity in 1980 as an animator of punk rock bands. Soon enough he discovered new sounds which were brought by the punk rock rebellion. Cabaret Voltaire, Public Image Ltd. or other “new wave” bands had an enormous influence on the perception of music by Cezar. Plunging into the fundaments of musical avant-garde (Karlheinz Stockhausen, Morton Feldman, Luc Ferrari, La Monte Young), the appearance...

But length never says anything about quality or its lacking off. Born June 6, 1992, Alexander Kibanov is an experimental music artist and composer from Antarctica. He has released under various pseudonymes (such as Earth Incubator, Headless Kamikaze, Illnathix) over one hundred of solo and collabarotive works (with many artists as diverse as GX...

And here I was thinking that the man we know all too well from his magnificent field recordings (Luis Antero) had taken a side step into a different cloak (Out Level). But upon checking any profiles for writing a little bit to whet your apetiteâs I realize that this is the eleventh release allready! I should rather frown upon myself for not having shared any of his music yet on a previous NTNS radio show. Alas so it is. After his earlier Website Story released on Just not Normal I can truly...

Joining the ranks of avid Field Recordists is Philippe Faujas from Spain. Making Just not Normal not per say a field recordings netlabel, but since I personally am a big fan of field recordings and feel they go extremely well amidst experimental music Philippe is very much welcomed to the world of JNN. Follow his link to an even bigger world of recorded sounds, but let this release be your guide into the world of this fine French artist living in Spain. He won my heart with his great sounds and...

6 tracks of minimalist beauty, darkish atmospheres and enchanting sounds. There is a certain mystique about this release; as if tucked away far on the antarctic with but a small friendly fire. The cold breeze snuggling around the cabin comforting the loneliness that one is waited for. A place of envy perhaps it is not, but the chilled sound of 'the last day again' will certainly clasp the listeners ear placing them momentarily in the vast and cold emptiness of white; to remind us once again of...

Live recordings from digital algorhythms. This is generative glitch that walks the far boarders of experimentalism, yet its content is so smooth and delicious. Meandering between the likes of Xenakis and Ikeda, this takes on a journey of its own. And even though this may be the shortest release on Just not Normal, I fell deeply in love with this album; beware as you may too!

In Greek mythology, Ixion and Tantalus were both legendary for their extreme hubris and the dire consequences that befell them as a result. Each was granted an audience with the gods, and betrayed the generosity shown to them. So many tales abound of the transgressions these two figures made against the gods that there is no one story to explain their unique fates. Yet it is precisely these unenviable fates for which they are most remembered. In its most simple form, the tale of Ixion is that...

A large portion of this album was composed from âdisturbancesâ that were recorded while living in an active haunted house. You may consider this your after Halloween treat, or just a plain immersive and fantastic album filled with darkness and just plain great tracks! What the maker probably donât realize though is that 112 in the Netherlands is the equal to 911 in the US. You may keep that number near while listening to this! Created by A. [sic], the latest endeavor of soft noise/dark ambient blowhard, Controlled Dissonance, is an expression of minimalistic composition. Stripping down to the bare bones, Controlled Dissonance culled the sounds for this release exclusively from field recordings and found material on microcassette. These recordings were manipulated with a transcription device, a handful of effects pedals and a small arsenal of digital effects. The resulting tracks both belie the humble origin of their source...

From the Boston Globe: DJ Radio Scotvoid is in Salem tonight to make noises with Buddah Machines (those are musical loop players), sampling gizmos, keyboards, noise makers, and other random equipment – including a Nintendo DS. The concert of cacophony will also include audience participation; Scotvoid will ask listeners to talk into the sampler so he can use their voices in his sound montage. “This is a new and very abstract concept, ” Scotvoid tells us. We certainly agree.

So, about 1 and 3/4 years ago, I finished a super long ambient track for my Zondagmorgen (remember this?!) project, entitled La Fin du Monde. My intentions, at the time, were to release it though IMP. That never happened, and it's been sitting on my hard drive ever since. I pulled it out, on a whim, this morning and listened to it on the bus today. It's actually better than I remember, so I thought I would send it your way to see if you would be interested in including it in as an upcoming JNN...
